Saturday 30th January 2010

This is the evening when we are holding a Karaoke/Disco event at the Addington Community Centre. Tickets are available at the door, admission £2.00 or £5.00 for a family of two adults and two children. Doors open at 7.00 pm.

All monies raised will be used for the benefit of the children in the league. The bar will be open so please don’t bring your own drinks

8th January 2010

It should be noted that until further notice all Academy matches will have changed kick-off times; match one will kick-off at 10.00 instead of 9.15, match two at 10.45 instead of 10.00 and match three at 11.30 instead of 10.45.

8th December 2009

This Saturday - 12th December - will be the last playing day before the Christmas/New Year break so it has been decided that the only games to be played on this day, weather and pitch conditions permitting, will be the Week Five Academy matches. This will bring the Academy and Premier divisions back into line and both groups will resume at week six in the New Year, probably on Saturday 9th January.

The management committee would like to take this opportunity to wish all visitors to this site a very Merry and Happy Christmas and a Joyful New Year.   santa_trying_to_ride_reindeer_md_wht_31089

29th November 2009

Regrettably the recent long spell of poor weather has affected pitch conditions and we have had to postpone several games of football but yesterday (28th) one of our Premier pitches was playable and we completed ‘Match day 5’ games. Unfortunately neither of the Academy pitches was playable therefore ‘Match day 5’ games in this division will be played at a later date if it necessary that they go ahead in order to decide finishing positions in the division table.

The next games in both the Premier and Academy divisions will be those for ‘Match day 6’

20th September 2009

We are now able to provide some firm dates and these are:

Saturday 3rd October - the two opening games are Terriers v. Comets playing for the Anniversary Cup with a 9.30 kick-off and Eagles v. Rangers playing for the HSBC Shield with a 10.30 kick-off. Both of these matches are for players who were in the teams last season.

After the trophies have been presented a friendly match between league managers and an Addington Palace FC team will kick-off at Noon to raise funds toward the purchase of a motorised wheelchair for a local youngster -Louis French.

Finally, on this day a second friendly match will kick-off at 1.00 pm between league managers and those players who left at the end of last season.

Saturday 10th October

The Kieran Sabine Trophy competition will take place involving all league teams. The Premier and Academy division will be competing for separate awards and matches will be played in groups of three teams similar to our Cup competition.

In the Academy event group A will consist of Terriers, Cubs and Wasps, group B will be Comets , Hawks and Tigers.

In the Premier event group A will be Eagles, Lions and Colts, group B will be Rangers, Arrows and Kestrels.

In both events the group winners will go forward to a final to play-off for the trophy.

Saturday 17th October

At last, the day some people might have thought would never come - the start of the league season proper with games as scheduled on the league fixture pages.

14th August 2009

The start of the 2009/10 season.

Those of you who have recently passed by the Rowdown School playing field may have noticed that the outside of our league building has been repainted. This was necessary because in a number of places the paint had been peeling very badly with the result that some of the timber beneath had suffered water damage and needed to be repaired or replaced.

This work was very time consuming and we were unable to complete other very necessary tasks within the building. These internal jobs must be finished before we can again make use of the building so it appears highly likely that we may have to postpone the usual early September start of the season. It should perhaps be explained that the maintenance of the building is the sole responsibility of the league so to save precious funds the bulk of the work has to be performed by the team managers.

We will do our best to avoid any prolonged delay in commencing to play football matches but at the moment we are unable to give a firm start date but we will publish this information on this page as soon as we can.

Managers will, of course, continue to keep the parents of their players directly informed.

17th May 2009

Last Saturday - 16th May - saw the conclusion of our playing season with the Premier division Six-a-side competition taking place in blustery wind conditions; the results of this event are shown on another page.

Trials for new players commence on Saturday 23rd May and we ask all those boys who wish to join us to report at Rowdown Primary School playing field at 9.30 am. These trials are for boys born between 1st September 1996 and 31st August 2001; further trials will take place on Thursday 28th May at 6.30 pm, Saturday 30th May at 9.30 am and Thursday 4th June at 6.30 pm. To be eligible for selection into one of our teams boys must attend at least two of these trials; boys attending fewer than two trials can, if they wish, be placed on to a list of reserves for possible selection at a later date.

Our final major event of the season is the annual Presentation of Awards ceremony which is taking place at 3.00 pm on Saturday 20th June at Addington High School. Admission tickets at £2.00 are available now via team managers, there is no charge for players or children under 12 years of age. Doors open at 2.30 pm and the intention is to commence proceedings at 3.00 pm sharp.

29th April 2009

Our league programme was successfully completed on the 25th April with EAGLES becoming the Premier League Champions by winning both halves of the season emulated by TERRIERS in the Academy League. This means that there is now no need for a play-off in either league. This enables us to bring forward our Super Cup event and this will now take place this Saturday 2nd May with the Cup Final now scheduled for Saturday 9th May. If weather conditions permit our annual Six-a-side event for Premier teams will be taking place on Saturday 16th May.

29TH March 2009

League matches:

On Saturday 4th April our National Squad will be playing in the first round of the National Tournament at Carshalton Little League, Middleton Road (opposite St. Helier Hospital) with their first of three games kicking off at 10.00 am. We hope that they and Managers Neil Harris and Paul Hollis will receive a lot of support

Because of this our own league matches will not be taking place, nor will those for the Academy league and the Bantams. The following week (Saturday 11th) is Easter weekend and it is anticipated that again no league matches will be played so if our National Squad fail to get through the first round games at Rowdown will resume on Saturday 18th April.

7th March 2009

‘Double bankers’

In order to complete a full programme of league games the remaining 10 matches for each team will be played as ‘double bankers’’ therefore on Saturday 14th March all teams will be playing those matches as listed on weeks 11 and 16 (the weeks that the same teams will be playing each other), and so on for weeks 12 & 17, etc.

1st half season winners:

Congratulations to the EAGLES team who have now won the Premier division without losing or drawing any matches thereby achieving the maximum of 30 points. Congratulations also to the TERRIERS team on winning the Academy division winning all their matches bar one which they drew 0 - 0 with second placed COMETS.

Well done to all teams in both divisions including those which were less successful.

14th February 2009

You may be wondering why so many matches have recently been postponed?  The main reason is, of course, that the adverse weather conditions (the worst for about 10 years) have rendered the pitches unplayable. We are not alone in this, other local leagues are facing similar problems with disruption to their playing programmes. And we have to respect the school’s wishes that we don’t cause any long term damage to the playing field which is also used by the children attending the school. So even though the weather on a Saturday morning might be fine we make a pitch inspection at about 8.30 a.m. and then decide if three games can be played on each pitch . A few years ago when it was 50 – 50 we went ahead and played, the pitches were cut up and took many months to recover so now on the occasions when it’s 50 – 50 we always call the games off. Some people have asked why we don’t have a pitch inspection on a Friday evening and the answer to this is that there was an occasion, again some years ago, when the matches were called off on a Friday evening only for it to be found that on the Saturday morning the pitches were playable. Therefore unless it is clearly obvious on a Friday evening that matches cannot be played on the Saturday our early morning inspections will continue.

However, it is not all doom and gloom – if we fall behind with the league programme we can easily catch up by playing evening games after the clocks are changed in March.  We have done this before and in such a situation the managers agree amongst themselves which evening in the week they prefer to play, normally one Academy and one Premier match on the same evening. But at the moment we don’t have a major problem.

This season we are very fortunate in that Messrs. HS&M Building Services Ltd. have generously sponsored a new kit for the Colts and Comets teams. The photograph below shows the two teams wearing this kit; unfortunately some players were not present when the picture was taken. Also in the picture are managers Lin Green and Paul Roberts.

Nostalgia

We are still looking for old pictures to place on our ‘Nostalgia’ pages. For example the one below, recently unearthed, was taken at our original playing field at Northdowns Crescent.

Early-Nat.Sqd.

Addington Palace F.C.

The local football club Addington Palace F.C. has long had a close association with our league and over the years many of our players have joined that club in order to play Sunday football. Indeed, many of our current, and former, league managers have formed teams to play in the Tandridge League under the Addington Palace banner - and with some success.

One such newly formed team is the Addington Palace u/11s which consists almost entirely of current Little League players and as the picture below shows recently enjoyed success by winning a pre-season competition. We shall be watching their progress with interest during the forthcoming season.

Anniversary matches on Saturday 27th September - update

Because some players in both Cubs and Terriers teams have to attend an open day at a local school the kick-off for the Academy match between those two teams has been advanced to 9.30 am. The kick-off for the Premier match between Eagles and Lions remains unchanged as 11.00 am. The canteen will not be open on this day.

Start of 2008 / 09 season

Our season will start on Saturday 20th September with the annual friendly tournament in which all teams take part. This is to let all new players get experience in real matches but with no prizes at the end of the event. In both the Premier and Academy divisions the teams will all play each other on a league basis over a period of about three hours. The first match is scheduled to kick-off at 9.15am so all players must attend no later than 8.45am.

Our two Anniversary games will take place on Saturday 27th September when Cubs will be kicking-off against Terriers at 10.00am and Eagles taking on Lions at 11.00am.

The league season proper will start on Saturday 4th October with matches being played as listed on the Premier and Academy fixtures pages.

Referee training course

The following note from Mark Leckey of Addiscombe Little League and a Surrey Registered Referee Instructor might be of interest to anyone thinking of becoming a referee. ‘The next referee training course is planned for early September 2008 and the current plans are that the course will be held at Trinity School, Croydon. The course following that is scheduled for January 2009. If anybody is interested in joining either course they should log on to the Surrey County FA website at www.surreyfa.co.uk for information and how to register. However, if people would prefer to find out more about the content of the course I am more than happy for them to contact me on my mobile 07775.797.378 in the first instance. Signed Mark Leckey’

Football trials for 2008/09

We shall be holding our annual football trials at Rowdown Primary School playing field, King Henry’s Drive on Saturday 31st May with a booking in time of 9.30 am. There will be three further trials - on Tuesday 3rd, Saturday 7th and Tuesday 10th June, the Tuesday evening book in time is 6.30 pm and on the Saturday at 9.30 am.

Boys are advised to attend all four trials but must attend a minimum of two to be eligible for selection.

When all four trials have been completed managers will meet to place as many boys as is possible into our teams. When this has been done each manager will then make direct contact with the parents of those boys new to his or her team. This meeting is not open to parents or players.

Any boy we have not been able to allocate to a team will be put onto a ‘reserve list’ and it is hoped that it will be possible to find a place for him during the season. A letter explaining this will be sent to the parents of all unsuccessful trialists.

It should be noted that players are required to attend training sessions organised by their manager, usually one evening a week, and must be available for matches every Saturday morning during the playing season.

05/05/08

Our local professional football club Crystal Palace has reached a play-off situation which might result in their being promoted to the Premier division. Some of our managers, players and their parents are strong supporters of the ‘Palace’ and want to see their first match on Saturday 10th May which meant that a decision had to be quickly taken about our own Premier and Academy league play-off games also scheduled to take place that day. It has been decided that to avoid any conflict of interest our Premier and Academy matches will now both kick off at about 9.30 am on the 10th May, this will enable our ‘Palace’ supporters to attend both events.

23/04/08

With the playing season now drawing to a close visitors may wish to note the following dates and events:

Saturday 26th April - Week 20 Premier and Academy league matches as shown on the respective pages

Saturday 3rd May - Super-Cup Saturday with Premier and Academy games both kicking off at 09.30 am

Saturday 10th May - League play-off with Academy kick off at 10.00 and Premier at 11.00 am

Saturday 17th May - Academy and Premier Cup Finals - times to be announced later

Saturday 24th May - Premier teams 6-a-side, kick of at 10.00 am. Players to attend no later than 09.30 am.

Saturdays 31st May & 7th June - Trials am.

Tuesdays 3rd & 10th June - Trials in the evening.

Saturday 14th June - Our u/10s National Squad will be competing at Goals Soccer Centre, Sutton - start at Noon, finish at 6.00 pm

NOTE: The date for this year’s Presentation has yet to be fixed but expect it to be in June, probably the 28th.

11/03/08

At 11.00 am on Saturday 15th March the draw will be held to decide team places in the Super Cup Saturday event. The date for Super Cup Saturday has not yet been fixed because the recent bad pitch conditions have meant we are somewhat behind with our league programme.

There will not be any football matches on Easter Saturday, 22nd March because it is thought that some managers might be unable to field a full team. Matches will resume on Saturday 6th April.

08/01/08

It is hoped all visitors to this site will have enjoyed a very happy Christmas and New Year; we can now look forward to some more exciting and competitive football matches which, if weather and pitch conditions permit, will recommence at week 11 on Saturday 12th January. Fixtures and kick-off times will be as shown on the relative Academy and Premier pages.

15/12/07

The first half season has now been completed with all Academy matches played but with the managers of Arrows and Kestrels having decided not to play their postponed week six fixture. The winners of the Academy division are Terriers with Eagles coming out on top in the Premier division, both teams by the narrow margin of just three points.

The players and managers will now hopefully enjoy a well earned Christmas break and matches in the second half season are scheduled to start on the 12th January.

SPONSORSHIP

It is with great pleasure that we can report that two of our former managers have recently agreed to sponsor the league by providing rain jackets for all match substitutes to wear when ‘on the bench’. Barrie and Gladys Semark were with us as managers in the 1970s and attended the 30 year celebrations we held in June this year.

The photograph below shows some of our players displaying the jackets, Barrie & Gladys are standing between Dave Sanford and Dave Russell on the right of the back row. Also in the picture are Les David, Mgr. Kestrels on the extreme left and Lyn Green on the extreme right.

The wording on the back of the jackets is ‘Barrie’s Mobility Services’, a local company owned by Barrie. The jackets, with the exception of Kestrels/Terriers are all in the team colours. (It was not possible to obtain maroon jackets so Kestrels/Terriers were issued with the colour ‘anthracite’).

18/09/07

On Saturday 22nd September we had our regular pre-season friendly matches where new players get accustomed to proper match conditions after training during the summer months. It was a very good day and we were visited by David Berman, a freelance photographer who often works for the Croydon Advertiser. We have been advised that a report on this day’s event will appear in the Croydon Advertiser on Friday 28th September but for those with access to the internet a visit to David Berman’s personal website is most rewarding with a fine display of some excellent photographs, the website is www.sitbonzo.com.

On Saturday 29th September our Charity Shield type of event for Academy and Premier teams. The Academy matches will kick-off at 9.30 am and this year three teams will be competing for the trophy, this is because last season’s Cup Competition resulted in a draw between Terriers and Tigers (aet) so both of these teams will be playing against each other and against Cubs who were League Champions. The Premier match will be between Cup winners Eagles and League Champions Lions, this match is scheduled to kick-off at 11.00 am. Founder member Cllr. Brenda Kirby has agreed to present the all five teams with the trophies and individual medals after the final whistle in the Premier match, she will also be presenting the September ‘Jack Petchey Award’ to Josh Peterson who was the only player last year to have completed five seasons in the league without missing a single match.

The league season for both Academy and Premier teams will commence on Saturday 29th September, the Bantams and Wildcats games are also due to start on this date.

27/07/07

The new ‘Jack Petchey’ page has now been added to this site and hopefully you will find it interesting. The next item to be added is news of the 30th Anniversary Celebrations and here again this will probably be a ‘new’ page so keep watching this space.

25/07/07

Kestrels and Terriers will be receiving a replacement kit for 2007/08 and have decided to revert to their original colours of maroon/sky blue. This means that all references to those teams in the tables on this web site will have to be re-coloured from yellow/blue to the new colours for the start of the 2007/08 season.

Our league has been accepted into the Jack Petchey Foundation Award Scheme which covers young people aged from 11 to 25 years of age and provided we comply with the requirements of that scheme we hope to receive quarterly grants. Further details will shortly be placed on a new ‘Jack Petchey’ page.

16/05/07

Apologies to all visitors - because of a technical problem it has not been possible to update this site for quite a few days. The problem has, we hope, been permanently solved and future updates will made more speedily but it will be a few more days before the backlog is cleared - today it has only been possible to show the results of the group matches played on Super Cup Saturday - 12th June. The Finals take place on Saturday 19th June - weather and pitch conditions permitting.

21/02/07

    30th Anniversary Social Evening - Saturday 2nd June 2007

The League was formed in June 1977 so this year we will have been providing regular and organised football for local children for 30 years. To mark this anniversary we are arranging for committee members, past and present, to meet on the 2nd June for a social evening at the Addington Community Centre in Central Parade.

Although we have managed to contact a large number of former members there are still many for whom we have no address or telephone number. These people are listed below with the year that they were first appointed to our management committee and it is hoped that readers of this page will be able to help us get in touch with them in order that they also can be invited to the social event.

If you have any information about anybody on the list please contact our Social Secretary Mrs Lyn Green on 020.8409.0575 or our Secretary, Jim Browne on 020.8657.2659

The Bantams now have their own page on this site with action photographs.

Under the direction of Dave Russell the Bantams have now been functioning for a year and are continuing to thrive and this has made us think about the titles of the two other divisions in our league i.e. the Main league and the Mini-soccer league. We feel that while the Bantams are taught the basics, the Mini-soccer teams improve on the football skills before progressing to full sided matches in the Main league. It has therefore been decided to change the latter two titles and the 7-a-side players will in future be in ‘Academy’ teams while their 11-a-side colleagues will be playing in the ‘Premier’ league. The titles used in this site will be amended as and when time permits.

2006 / 07

Because heavy rain rendered the pitches unplayable on Saturday 25th November the matches scheduled for that day will now be played, pitch conditions permitting, on Saturday 2nd December. Please note that on this day the 1st and 3rd Academy games have been switched and will be played as shown on the Academy Fixtures page.

31st October

girl dribbling  ‘The Wildcats       girl running with ball

Our Chairman Rob Jeal has recently started a separate training and football session specifically for girls in school years 4, 5 and 6. If you know of any girls in these school years who would enjoy taking part in these sessions get them to come along to Little League at 12.30 pm on Saturdays when Rob will put them through their paces, they will need to have their own playing kit including shin pads.

Some of the girls who came along to the first session have decided that they would like to be known as the Wildcats, hence the title above.

19th October ‘06

This Saturday the 21st October we are holding our annual sponsored walk at Rowdown School in order to raise some much needed funds. We have asked all walkers to report between 9.30 to 10.30 am and it is hoped that all players will give us their support. If the weather is really bad the walk will be postponed to take place on the following Saturday 28th October.

Visitors interested in our Nostalgia pages may wish to have a look at two recently received photo’s - Arrows/Wasps and Colts/Comets - taken in 1992, two of the managers are still with us - Lyn Green has continued throughout with the Colts team while Dave Russell is now with Terriers.

9th Sept. ‘06

The league season is on track to start on Saturday 16th September but the kick-off times of two of the scheduled Premier matches have been switched because the managers Lions would have been unable to be with their team at 12.00 Noon. The Premier matches on this day will now now be match one at 10.00 am - Lions v. Eagles, match two at 11.00 am - Kestrels v. Rangers (unchanged) and match three at Noon - Arrows v. Colts. The Academy games are not affected and will take place as originally scheduled. Programmes for the forthcoming season have now been received and will be distributed to managers on the 16th September. Today’s Anniversary matches saw a very close and exciting Academy match which Hawks won by 4 goals to 2 after Cubs twice took the lead, this was followed by another great game where Rangers edged ahead of Eagles by 3 goals to 1. A fuller match report and some photographs will be placed on the Anniversary Matches page as soon as possible.

August 2006

The 2006/07 season is just about to start and in order that new players in the Academy league and those players who have moved up to the Premier league can gain some experience we are having a ‘friendlies’ day on Saturday 2nd September. All six teams in each league will be taking part and each team will play a short match against all the other five teams in their own league but with no prizes for the team coming out on top. Our aim is that all teams in the Premier league will have a minimum of one hour of football while those in the Academy league will have 50 minutes in total (five games x 5 minutes each way). It will be necessary for the Premier league matches to kick-off no later than 9.00 am and the Academy league at 9.30 am - these times are provisional so keep referring to this page for any changes that might be made.

On the following Saturday - the 9th September - we will have the two Anniversary games with Hawks taking on Cubs at 10.00 in the Academy match and Rangers taking on Eagles in the Premier match at 11.00 am. These two matches will be followed by a game between managers and those players who left the league at the end of last season.

The league season proper will commence on Saturday 16th September and details of all league fixtures are shown on the respective pages on this website

Freeware

If you are interested in maintaining your own record of a football league, be it Little League, a Sunday League or even one of the major leagues the freeware programme ‘Ltrack’ is thoroughly recommended. The author is Nigel Thomas and the Ltrack programme can be downloaded from his website www.ngthomas.co.uk. It’s well worth having a look at and we use it to keep our Little League records up to date.
